How to Choose RC Crawler Tires: Size, Compound & Inserts

Choosing the right RC crawler tires directly affects grip, traction, ground clearance and how the vehicle behaves on rock, dirt and trails. The best tire is not simply the largest or softest one: it needs to match your scale, wheels and terrain.

This guide covers the key points to check before choosing tires for SCX24, TRX4M, AX24, FCX24, SCX10, TRX4 and other crawlers.

1. Wheel size: 1.0, 1.3, 1.55, 1.9 or 2.2

The first specification to check is wheel size. Micro crawlers often use 1.0 or 1.3 tires, while 1/10 crawlers commonly use 1.9 or 2.2 formats.

A tire designed for the wrong wheel size will not fit correctly even if the outside diameter looks similar.

2. Outside diameter and ground clearance

A taller tire can increase ground clearance and help over some obstacles. It can also rub the body, links or shocks and change the final drive ratio.

On micro crawlers, just a few millimeters can noticeably change the way the vehicle drives.

3. Tire width

A wider tire can add contact area, but it can also increase rubbing and steering load. Check clearance around knuckles, links and shocks.

4. Soft compounds and tread pattern

Soft rubber compounds are popular for crawling because they conform better to uneven terrain at low speed. Tread pattern then changes how the tire behaves on rock, loose dirt, mud and mixed surfaces.

Pin, mud-terrain and more open block patterns each suit different conditions.

5. Inserts and foams

Tire behavior also depends heavily on the insert. An insert that is too firm can limit tire deformation, while one that is too soft can make the vehicle imprecise and allow excessive tire collapse.

With beadlock tires, the tire, insert and wheel should be treated as one system.

6. Wheel weight and drivetrain load

Heavy wheels and brass rings can improve stability by lowering the center of gravity. But extra rotating mass also adds load to the steering servo, motor and drivetrain.

Add weight carefully rather than simply chasing the heaviest possible setup.

Simple buying checklist

  1. Check wheel size.
  2. Check outside diameter and width.
  3. Check vehicle clearance.
  4. Choose compound and tread for your terrain.
  5. Match inserts and wheel weight to the setup.
