Best FMS FCX24 / FCX18 Upgrades: What to Upgrade First?
Share
The FMS FCX24 and FMS FCX18 are excellent platforms for building a more capable micro crawler. The key is not to replace every part: a coherent build starts with changes that genuinely improve traction, stability and control, then moves to suspension and drivetrain upgrades when the terrain or driving style calls for them.
Here is the order we recommend for meaningful gains without adding unnecessary weight or replacing components that already work well.
1. Start with tires: the most immediate improvement
On a crawler, tires have a major influence on traction. A softer compound and tread pattern suited to your terrain can improve grip on rocks, dirt and technical obstacles without changing the motor or drivetrain.
For the FCX24 and FCX18, always check outside diameter, tire width, wheel diameter and body clearance. A taller tire can increase ground clearance, but it can also rub the body or alter the effective gearing.
Compare our RC crawler wheels and tires and dedicated RC crawler tires. The FMS FCX24 / FCX18 parts collection also groups products directly relevant to these platforms.
2. Lower the center of gravity with sensible weight
After tires, low-mounted weight is often one of the most effective upgrades. Brass components positioned low on the vehicle — around wheels, steering knuckles, portals or axles where compatible — can improve side-hill stability and reduce rollovers.
The goal is not to add as much weight as possible. Excess mass increases load on the servo, driveshafts, gears and motor. Add weight gradually and keep it as low as practical.

3. Suspension and high-clearance links
A well-set suspension helps the tires stay in contact with the ground. Suitable shocks can improve chassis control, while high-clearance links create more space under the vehicle when crossing obstacles.
The right setup depends on shock length, travel, mounting points and vehicle geometry. Longer shocks are not automatically better: raising the chassis too far can increase the center of gravity and reduce stability.
Explore our RC crawler suspension parts. The FCX24 / FCX18 range includes shocks and several types of links in aluminum, stainless steel or brass depending on the product.
4. Steering: precision before raw power
Once the tires generate more grip and extra front weight has been added, the steering system works harder. Play in the linkage, flexible components or an undersized servo can become more noticeable.
Before replacing the servo, check the mechanical links and make sure nothing binds. If an upgrade is needed, choose components suited to the vehicle scale and electrical system. Precise, consistent steering is more useful than an oversized servo that puts unnecessary load on the electronics.

5. Drivetrain, motor and driveshafts: upgrade when needed
The FCX24 and FCX18 can also benefit from drivetrain changes such as suitable brushed motors, reinforced driveshafts, gears and other components depending on the exact vehicle version. These upgrades become more relevant when the crawler is heavier, regularly tackles demanding obstacles or when an original component reaches its limits.
For crawling, prioritize smooth low-speed response, useful torque and drivetrain reliability. Higher top speed is usually less important than control.

6. FCX24 and FCX18: check exact compatibility
The FCX24 and FCX18 names cover several vehicles and variants. A part listed for one FCX24 does not automatically fit every FCX24, and the same applies to FCX18 models. Dimensions, wheelbase, mounting points, axles and drivetrain layouts can differ.
Before ordering, always verify the exact model, measurements and compatibility details on the product page. This is especially important for driveshafts, links, shocks, motors, mounts and axle parts.
What upgrade order should you follow?
For a mostly stock vehicle focused on crawling, we generally recommend: tires → low and moderate weight → suspension / links → steering → drivetrain. This makes it easier to feel what each modification actually changes and avoids replacing parts without a clear benefit.
If scale realism is your priority, you can keep the mechanical setup closer to stock and focus on wheels, tires, lighting and accessories. For a more technical crawler build, concentrate on traction, ground clearance, stability and low-speed control.
