Modified TRX4M RC crawler with tires, suspension and performance upgrades - Vorexon RC

Best Traxxas TRX4M Upgrades: What to Upgrade First?

The Traxxas TRX4M is a versatile 1/18 scale crawler, but a few carefully chosen upgrades can noticeably improve traction, steering precision, stability and drivetrain reliability. The goal is not to replace every stock part immediately: an effective build starts by identifying what is actually limiting the vehicle.

This guide covers the best TRX4M upgrades to consider first and explains how tires, steering, suspension, weight distribution, motor and drivetrain work together.

What should you upgrade first on a TRX4M?

For most TRX4M builds, traction and steering are the best starting points. Better tires help the crawler use the available grip, while stronger steering helps hold the requested wheel angle under load.

After that, weight distribution, suspension, motor and drivetrain upgrades can refine the crawler for the terrain and driving style you prefer.

1. Wheels and tires: improve traction before power

Tires directly affect how well a TRX4M climbs, descends and holds a line over uneven terrain. Softer rubber and a tread pattern suited to crawling can improve grip on rocks and loose surfaces.

Wheel choice also affects weight distribution. Adding some mass low on the vehicle can improve stability, but excessive rotating weight also increases stress on the servo and drivetrain.

2. TRX4M servo upgrade: stronger steering under load

As traction and vehicle weight increase, the steering system has to work harder. A stronger servo can help maintain steering angle when the tires are loaded against rocks or obstacles.

One TRX4M-specific option available at Vorexon is the INJORA INJS2065 7kg high-voltage waterproof digital servo with mount.

Published specifications list a 4.8–8.4 V operating range and up to 7.0 kg.cm stall torque at 8.4 V. Always check the electronics and mounting points on your own setup before installation.

3. Add weight low rather than high

TRX4M bodies can place a significant amount of mass above the axles, especially on scale-oriented builds. Adding targeted weight in low areas of the chassis can improve stability on climbs and side slopes.

The INJORA 7mm brass wheel hex extenders for TRX4M are one example of a part that can add weight low while changing track width depending on the selected version.

Avoid adding brass everywhere. More mass also means more work for the servo, motor and drivetrain. A balanced crawler is usually more effective than an unnecessarily heavy one.

4. Suspension: tune control and articulation

Suspension changes can affect ride height, articulation and how quickly weight transfers from one side of the crawler to the other.

Vorexon carries the INJORA 53mm oil shocks for TRX4M.

Longer shocks or different settings should be chosen as part of the complete suspension setup. More articulation is not automatically better if the vehicle ends up too tall and loses stability.

5. High-clearance links for improved obstacle clearance

Suspension links can contact rocks before the chassis does. High-clearance designs change their shape and position to provide more space under the vehicle in certain situations.

The INJORA CNC aluminum high-clearance link set is listed specifically for TRX4M Defender and Bronco 1/18 models.

Because link lengths and geometry matter, always check your exact TRX4M version before ordering rather than treating every link set as universal.

6. TRX4M motor upgrade: when to change the stock motor

A motor upgrade makes sense when the stock power system is limiting low-speed control, torque or the speed range you want. The motor should still be matched to the gearbox, gearing and electronics rather than chosen in isolation.

The INJORA 180 brushed motor in 48T or 55T is a direct TRX4M-focused option with a stainless-steel pinion. Check the motor mount, pinion and electronics compatibility before installation.

If you want to replace more of the drivetrain at the same time, the INJORA CNC transmission with 180 48T brushed motor combines the motor and gearbox in one package. A larger INJORA CNC transmission with 370 45T motor is also available for compatible modified builds.

Before choosing a complete transmission-and-motor setup, check chassis mounting points, driveshaft alignment, available space and electronics compatibility.

7. Strengthen the drivetrain as traction and weight increase

Better tires, additional weight and harder terrain can place more stress on drivetrain components.

The INJORA V2 stainless-steel center driveshafts are designed for TRX4M Defender and Bronco models and provide a metal option for these setups.

For gearing changes, Vorexon also carries the INJORA stainless-steel overdrive / underdrive transmission gear set for TRX4M.

A gearing change alters crawler behavior and should be chosen for a specific objective rather than simply because another gear set is available.

Recommended TRX4M upgrade order

  1. Tires — improve traction and terrain contact first.
  2. Steering servo — especially important as grip or weight increases.
  3. Low-mounted weight — improve stability without overloading the vehicle.
  4. Suspension — tune ride height, articulation and control.
  5. High-clearance links — reduce hang-ups where relevant.
  6. Motor and electronics — change them when the stock power system becomes the real limitation.
  7. Driveshafts and drivetrain — strengthen the system as loads increase.
  8. Gearing and advanced tuning — refine behavior after the basics are sorted.

TRX4M Defender, Bronco and other versions: check compatibility

Not every TRX4M upgrade fits every version in exactly the same way. Some parts are designed specifically for Defender or Bronco models, while others depend on wheel size, track width, suspension geometry or parts already installed.

Always check compatibility details on each product page before ordering, especially when combining wheels, brass parts, suspension links, motor and drivetrain components.

Build the TRX4M for the terrain you actually drive

A TRX4M used mainly for trail driving does not need the same setup as a crawler built for highly technical rock sections. Choose every upgrade around the problem you want to solve.

If traction is lacking, start with tires. If steering becomes weak under load, work on the servo. If the vehicle tips too easily, lower the weight distribution. If low-speed power or control is the limitation, consider the motor. If the drivetrain becomes the weak point, strengthen it once the rest of the setup is balanced.
