Which Motor for a Traxxas TRX4M? Torque, Speed & Gearing Guide

Changing the motor in a Traxxas TRX4M can improve torque, low-speed control and crawling performance. But a faster or more powerful motor is not automatically better: the right choice depends on gearing, vehicle weight and terrain.

This guide explains how to choose a TRX4M motor without upsetting the balance of the crawler.

1. Torque or speed: define the goal

For crawling, very low-speed control is usually more useful than maximum speed. If technical crawling is the priority, look for smooth response and enough torque. For mixed use, a slightly faster setup can make sense.

2. Motor turns: 48T, 55T and other windings

On brushed motors, turn count affects behavior. In general, higher turn counts favor control and torque over speed, while lower turn counts tend to increase speed. Final behavior also depends on gearing and voltage.

3. Motor size and fitment

180 motors and larger motor packages do not all mount the same way. Check mounting points, available length, motor diameter and transmission alignment.

4. Gearing and drivetrain

A motor never works alone. Gear ratio and drivetrain determine how torque reaches the wheels. A motor change can disappoint if gearing does not match the intended use.

5. Weight, tires and added load

Larger tires, heavier wheels and lots of brass increase load on the motor and drivetrain. If your TRX4M is heavily weighted, account for that before choosing a faster motor.

6. ESC and electronics

Make sure the ESC and power system are compatible with the motor. Physical fitment does not guarantee electrical compatibility.

Which TRX4M motor should you choose?

For crawling, prioritize low-speed control and mechanical compatibility. For a more versatile truck, aim for a balance of torque and speed.
